NEBE holds consultative meeting with stakeholders of Sidama referendum

The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) conducted a consultative meeting with representatives of the Federal Police; the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People's Region Police Commission representatives, Head of the Regional Command Post, Hawassa City Police Commander, Head of the Sidama Zone Police and the Head of the Regional Administration and Security Bureau. During the discussion, the Board noted that elections require unique security arrangements different form ordinary, daily provisions. Coordinated cooperation between law enforcement bodies is badly needed to make voter registration, polling day and post-election processes peaceful, and to ensure security of election officials. Security forces drawn from various bureaus expressed reflected on situations in their respective areas noting that peace and stability of the zone is showing improvement. The representatives pointed out the challenges that might arise and actions to be taken to resolve them.
Finally, the gathering agreed to prepare a security plan of the referendum for 27th September meeting, which outlines security issues that may arise during the process (preparation for the referendum, voting, and the post-referendum), actions that will be taken, and the responsible party for each action. It was agreed that gathering will meet on 4th October 2012. The National Election Board would like to express its appreciation for the cooperation it was rendered by concerned parties.
