NEBE Consults Political Parties on Security Issues for the 7th General Election

The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) consulted with political parties on security issues in constituencies for the 7th general election on March 11, 2026. All five board members, including Chairperson Melatwork Hailu, attended the consultation. During the meeting, the parties provided additional clarification on constituency security concerns they had identified and submitted to the Board in advance. Topics of discussion included security conditions in several constituencies, freedom to campaign, political space, and measures to ensure poll workers can perform their duties without undue influence.

Melatwork stated that the Board is working to ensure the relevant government bodies take appropriate measures on issues the NEBE has identified. Going forward, the Board will deploy a monitoring team comprising Board monitors, representatives of political parties, and members of civil society organizations (CSOs) to constituencies where political parties have raised security concerns.

As previously noted, the NEBE had consulted with presidents of regional states, mayors of city administrations, senior officials from security institutions, representatives of national political parties, and CSOs on detailed peace and security reports from constituencies. These reports, collected from regional states and security institutions, were categorized as Green, Yellow, or Red.
