The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) started conducting its lessons learned validation workshop on the 6th General Election today, April 28, 2022
The Board has been embarking on documenting its lessons learned exercise to review NEBE’s implementation of all components of the electoral process following the 6th General Election. In this process, members of the Board, staff members, regional office heads, political parties, observer groups, civil societies, federal and regional government officials, judiciaries, security and legal bodies, and donor organizations like the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), European Center for Electoral Services (ECES) and other supporting organizations have participated by including more than 400 stakeholders and conducting over 50 focus group discussions, workshops, and one-on-one interviews, and questionnaires in February and March.
The methodology implemented for the assessment conforms to the key electoral principles of Independence, Impartiality, Transparency, Professionalism, Inclusiveness, and Sustainability. The thematic areas that are the focus of the lessons learned include areas of the electoral cycle such as legal and institutional reform, election operational planning and implementation, voter registration, candidate registration, election campaign, polling, counting, results management, election dispute resolution, election observation, voter education, gender and inclusion, etc. Several tools were used depending on the type of stakeholder engaged.
During this two-days’ workshop being held today April 28 and tomorrow April 29, 2022, findings from the lessons learned exercise, including the challenges and success stories are presented in the presence of the above-mentioned stakeholders. The Board will announce the findings and the practical recommendations from the workshop to the public, and it is believed that this will serve as an input for future elections and other activities to be conducted by the Board.
