Clarification from the National Election Board of Ethiopia

Based on the notice from the National Election Board of Ethiopia to 26 political parties, the parties have either been conducting their general assemblies or making preparations towards convening one. Based on this, the status of the general assembly of the political parties is as follows.

The political parties that have conducted their general assembly are

  1. Prosperity Party
  2. Renaissance Party
  3. Kaffa Green Party
  4. Gambella People Liberation Movement

The political parties that have set the date for their general assembly

  1. Mocha Democratic Party (March 16 and 17)
  2. Argoba Nationality Democratic Movement (March 17)
  3. Amhara Democratic Forces Movement (March 16)

Political parties to which the Board responded to their request on an extension of time to convene their general assembly

  1. Oromo Liberation Movement – the party stated that since there is a security problem in some parts of the country, its members cannot arrive before the specified time. So, the party has requested to hold its general assembly on April 8, and its request has been granted.
  2. Ethiopian Freedom Party - the party stated that its most of its members are from the Amhara and Oromia region where there are some security problems. So, the party has requested to hold its general assembly on April 10, and its request has been granted.
  3. Ethiopian Social Democratic Party - The party stated the reasons that materials to be printed haven’t yet been ready and the high cost of meeting halls, in addition to the extra time needed for the preparation the party has requested to hold its general assembly on April 2, and its request has been granted.
  4. Freedom and Equality Party - The party stated that since the financial and logistical issues necessary for the general assembly are not yet conducive for the party, it has requested to hold its general assembly on March 27, and its request has been granted.
  5. Oromo Federalist Congress - The party stated that its members are still in prison; its regional offices are closed; and due to conflicts, some parts of the Oromia Region are not safe yet. Due to these reasons, the party has requested to hold its general assembly on March 26, and its request has been granted.
  6. New Generation Party – The party stated that during the time that its leader was in prison, the day to day activities of the party have been disrupted. Besides this, the party mentioned the instability in some parts of the country as a reason for its general assembly to be held on April 23, but the Board decided that the time until April 16, 2022 is enough to convene the general assembly.
  7. All Ethiopian Unity Party - The party reasoned out that since there are numerous conflicts in Oromia, Amhara, Benishangul Gumuz, and other regions which have caused a transportation problem, the party has requested for its general assembly to be held on May 7 and 8, but the Board decided that the time until April 16, 2022 is enough to convene the general assembly.
  8. Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party - The party reasoned out that since there are numerous conflicts in Oromia Region, and due to the fact that there are logistic and financial problems, the party has requested to hold its general assembly on April 8 -10, and its request has been granted.
  9. Hibir Ethiopia Democratic Party – The party stated that it needed more time to revise, amend, and improve its program and to finalize its audit. It also stated that it faced financial shortage to hold the general assembly, so it has requested to hold its general assembly on April 3, 2022, and its request has been granted.
  10. National Movement of Amhara – Since the party has previously announced on its social media pages and through its party structure that it would hold its general assembly on March 20, 2022 and preparations have been set towards that date, the Board allowed the party to hold its general assembly on the date specified.
  11. Gamo Democratic Party – The party complained that since its leaders and members have been in prison, and since they are terminated from their work and are being harassed, the Board allowed the party to hold its general assembly on April 10, 2022 according to the request that the party presented.
  12. Boro Democratic Party – Due to the security problem in Metekel Zone, members of the political party can use transportation only when there is a convoy to protect them. So, the party has requested to hold its general assembly on March 19 and 20, 2022, and its request has been granted.

Here is the list of parties who stated that there is an extreme security problem in the areas where they function and that they cannot organize a general assembly. Hence, the Board granted the parties their request not to hold their general assemblies.

  2. Union of Tigrians for Democracy and Sovereignty
  3. Argoba People’s Democratic Organization
  4. Afar People Justice Democracy Party

Here is the list of parties which have presented their request but haven’t been given a decision yet, and their request is being reviewed.

  1. Ogaden National Liberation Front
  2. Oromo Liberation Front
  3. Sidama Liberation Movement
